The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria  as the immediate cause of World War I, but the conflict had deeper origins. European expansionism, where nations controlled large amounts of land in empires around the world, was also a factor.  The War started in 1914. The Battle of Verdun was a months-long, bloody clash between the French and German armies in 1916. It was the longest battle of the war and resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. The Battles of the Isonzo were a series of 12 battles fought between the Italians and Austrians along the Italian Front from 1915 to1917.  The armies were composed of Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire; and the Allies, which included France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan and later, the United States.
3.  John Jr and Yuēhàn learned that the US joined in on the war because of Germany's submarine attacks on passenger and merchant ships in 1917 which  became the primary motivation behind Wilson's decision to enter the War.  New military technologies and trench warfare resulted in unprecedented levels of destruction and carnage.  The Allied Powers won the war, which was declared over in 1918. 
4.  John Jr and Yuēhàn realized that World War I had a profound impact on world history, including the fall of four great imperial dynasties, the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia.

One sunny afternoon, John Jr and Yuēhàn were watching TV. They came across a special about World War I. The two friends were curious and decided to watch it. They learned that World War I started in 1914. It was a very important event in history.

The Allies included France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and later, the United States. These groups fought fiercely against each other. The war was truly global.
