Ellie had just moved from England to a lovely small village in Spain. She was excited but also a little nervous. Everything looked so different, and she didn’t know anyone yet.

A New Beginning

Ellie’s Mum suggested they have a little walk to the park. Ellie agreed and they set off. The park was full of life with groups of children playing. Ellie’s Mum found a bench and set their things down. Ellie noticed another girl playing near a big tree. The girl had brown hair, warm brown eyes, and wore a brown bunny ears headband. Ellie took a deep breath and walked over.

The Park Adventure

“Hello! My name is Ellie. What’s your name?” she asked, smiling. Luna smiled back and said, “Hola! Me llamo Luna. Ellie blinked. She didn’t understand Spanish yet! Ellie pointed to herself and repeated, “Ellie.” Luna giggled and pointed to herself, saying, “Luna.” “Ellie.” “Luna.” They both laughed, now knowing each other’s names.

Meeting Luna

Ellie thought for a moment. “Hola,” she tried, repeating what Luna had said. Luna beamed and replied, “Hello!” “Hello!” Ellie said again. “Hola!” Luna repeated. They both laughed.

Learning New Words

“Let’s play!” Ellie said, pretending to hop like a bunny. “¡Vamos a jugar!” Luna repeated, hopping around with Ellie. “Hopping!” Ellie giggled. “¡Saltar!” Luna said, hopping even higher. Ellie saw a flower and pointed at it. “Flower,” she said. Luna pointed too. “Flor,” she said with a smile. They repeated together, “Flower, Flor! Flower, Flor!” “Tree,” Ellie said, pointing to a big tree. “Árbol,” Luna echoed, pointing to the same tree. They both said, “Tree, Árbol! Tree, Árbol!” and giggled again.

It was so much fun learning a new language and not scary at all. Ellie, it’s time to go called Ellie’s Mum. Ellie looked at Luna and smiled. “Bye, Luna!” she said, waving. Luna smiled and waved back, “Adios, Ellie!”

Learning Through Play

As Ellie walked home, she thought about all the new words she had learned. “Hola… Hello… Flower… Flor… Tree… Árbol… Hop… Saltar… Adiós Goodbye,” she whispered with a smile. She couldn’t wait to play with Luna again.
